Rita M. Worthington, a social justice and equity advocate, was elected to the City of Kingston’s Common Council as Alderwoman for the Fourth Ward where she served three terms. While in office, she chaired both Community Development and Laws and Rules Committees. By unanimous vote, she became the first African American to serve as Majority Leader of the Common Council.

She served on the Board of Directors for the Ulster County Mental Health Association and Save Them Now, a re-entry program for returning citizens from incarceration and was an elected Trustee on the Board of Directors for the Kingston City Library. As liaison and moderator between police and community, she was instrumental in orchestrating community policing initiatives., guidelines and procedures.

A graduate of Kaplan University School of Legal Studies, she is employed as a Family Law and Litigation Paralegal with O’Connor & Partners, PLLC. Her most recent endeavor was the opening of Kingdom Fit, a fitness program led by certified trainers at no cost to the community.
